Hurricane Sandy-Tell Us Your Story

Back To All News

Monday, November 19, 2012

We are collecting stories about how well people with disabilities fared before, during, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  Please tell us about the challenges you faced as a person with a disability or ongoing health condition. Also, please let us know the ways in which you were helped or helped others.

We may use your story or elements of your story to learn what works and what doesn’t, to recognize the good and strengths in people, and to join with other disability nonprofits recommend changes to government agencies on how they can better assist and accommodate people with disabilities. Please try your best not to use more that 500 words in your story.  Bullet points are encouraged.

Please include:

  1. Your disability or condition
  2. Your location at the time of the storm
  3. Were you alone or with others?
  4. Did you use a shelter?  How accessible was it and how accommodating were the personnel and volunteers at the shelters?
  5. How did the power outages affect you?
  6. If you receive personal care assistance by an agency or independent worker, what happened while the transit systems were out?
  7. What couldn’t you access?

Please email your story to hurricanesandy@yadempowers.org. Your name will be kept confidential if we use any elements of your story in any electronic or print publication, unless you provide permission by email or postal mail to share your name in anything we release to the public.

Woah! I’m really loving the templatetheme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that perfect balance between usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a great job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog! eceacddbbade
